Organizational Update

TMS has endured significant financial challenges this year. Due to changes in state budgets, COVID-19 funding abruptly retracted and grant notices being delayed, TMS has been forced to restructure programs to stay in operation. These changes have been completely unanticipated, and devastating. Regardless of how hard the struggle is, our team continues to adapt and adjust to meet the needs of our service communities: Dorris, Macdoel, Tulelake and Newell, CA and Merrill and Malin, OR, with available funding.

Program Adjustments

2024 Tulelake summer camp is one of those adjustments. Current funding allows for us to serve 30 total youth, kindergarten to sixth grade, between Merrill, Malin, and Tulelake. California State budget cuts and reduction in grant funding dollars has hindered our capacity to serve students. As a team, we are devastated to have such a reduction in how many students we can serve at our 2024 Tulelake camp, but with challenges come new opportunities.

In partnership with Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT), this summer 30 Tulelake students and 55 Butte Valley students will participate in:

  • Volleyball, soccer and basketball camps
  • Campus tours and exposure to technical careers
  • Lego workshops
  • STEM projects

Students will enjoy daydreaming about their future careers and connecting the value of academics/educational success to their future. We can't wait to see how this partnership and exposure will impact the lives of youth.

Our final adjustment to our summer model will be the number of counselors and junior counselors (teens) we can employ at our Tulelake site. This summer, we are only able to hire 3 counselors and 2 junior counselors. We are excited for the interview process and are so empowered by how many teens WANT the opportunity to work for TMS.

With secured funding for the Fall, TMS will revise our teen program to be more innovative and focused on youth-led opportunities. Our goal is to work with our school districts and families to better equip our teens with leadership skills that will carry through their lives and inform healthier decision-making processes.

The Ask

If we can raise an additional $50,000 we would be able to increase weekly enrollment by 20 campers and 4 teen counselors for our Tulelake site. Inclusive of OIT camp registration fees, transportation, increases in minimum wage and food/program expenses, we need to raise $400 per camper each week.

Time is of the essence, and we must raise the additional funds by May 20, 2024, to finish logistics preparation.

Marketing

As a sponsor, you will receive prominent recognition throughout the year for your generosity. Marketing of your company will be represented by TMS, as follows:

  • Your logo will be displayed on our camp materials, including:
    • banners, flyers, and water bottles
  • We will acknowledge your generosity on our website and social media platforms
  • Add your name to our donor wall at TMS Complex in Tulelake
